Trend

WGSN emphasizes versatility, with painterly statement prints mixed in with reliable textural patterns. Maximalist, expressive florals are in style. Monochromatic, nature-inspired textures are also fashionable. Color trend reports display core earth based hues as well as pops of punchy, summery tones. Colors such as bright citrus, cool greys, and plant-based hues reign popular.

Research

Process

Referencing the silhouette of sunflowers, motifs are sketched and painted. The light colors allow for a painterly and gestural application. After being scanned, the image is cleaned up in Photoshop. Using Filter > Other > Offset, spaces are filled to make a repeat pattern. Background elements are added, and recolors are made in Index mode.

Background texture was creating using Photoshop brushes and the liquify tool. A simple overlay design was added and adjusted with the Pattern Preview tool and Offset filter. The print was then colorized in Index mode.

Collection Overview

Sunnie

The Sunnie print was inspired by Sunflowers and the upcoming trend of painterly prints and citrusy colors. By starting with watercolor, the motifs in this print take on a natural, gestural feel.

With industry research, florals continue to be a popular choice in the womens market. The primary colorway of Sunnie is fresh and bright, just like the Belk woman.

This print is best suited for cotton and polyester blends.

Micro

Micro is based off of cellular structures. Given the trend forecast for non-prints in Spring 2022, cell-like elements fit within a sweet spot of texture and pattern. This print pairs well with shorts and leggings, as well as accessories such as sweatbands.

With its tiny texture, Micro is best printed on polyester and spandex blends.
